We have been in the planning stages before I left for my trip to England and it was almost hit the ground running once I got back on the 25th. We have our first rehearsal on Saturday, Oct 3rd and I'm pretty excited about it. I'm sure my field of study (behavioral science/psychology) makes this subject more interesting to me. Also, being from the South, the topic of hate crimes and human rights is one that is embedded into how I was raised.
Today I had a discussion with one of my best friends that really amazes me. How can anyone believe that human rights or hate crimes are not something that affects them personally? Just because this didn't happen in their backyard, that it "doesn't rank high enough on the list" of things to be informed about. I know we are all different. We have different interests and different opinions, but to come across as if being socially concious doesn't matter since it doesn't affect me directly is just something I don't understand.
